How essential is "Rest/Relaxation" in our day to day life?

Is it advisable for a highly ambitious person to reduce time for rest or relaxation and put more hours to work? How far can our body and mind endure? I have heard people have stayed alive going through phases of extreme hardship, working for say 16 hours daily (two jobs at a time). What is your opinion about this? Thanks.
